Indian poetry in English is as old as Henery Derozio ( 1807-1831). There is an impressive list of poets who wrote during the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. Michael Madhusudan Dutt (1824-1873), Toru Dutt (1856-1924), Manmohan Ghose (1867-1924), Sri Aurobindo (1872-1924), Rabindernath Tagore (1861-1941), Sarojini Naidu (1879-1949) Harindranath Chattopadhyaya (1898) and many others. It is an indisputable fact that each of the successful poets among them cultivated a proficiency in English language and that the output of most among them was prolific.
