This study investigates the interplay between occupational burnout and passion for work within the Information Technology (IT) sector in Delhi National Capital Region (NCR). Focusing on harmonious and obsessive passion, the research aims to discern their impact on emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and professional efficacy among IT professionals. In its methodology, the study targets major IT companies, selecting a sample of 500 employees with experience of over 8 years to ensure diverse perspectives within the dynamic sector. Employing the Passion Scale and the Maslach Burnout Inventory General Survey, the research used Karl Pearson’s Product Moment Coefficient Correlation for statistical analysis. The findings unravel significant associations between harmonious passion and burnout components. A negative correlation with emotional exhaustion and cynicism implies that harmonious passion for work is linked to lower levels of burnout. Conversely, a positive correlation with professional efficacy suggests that a positive work engagement enhances one’s sense of professional competence. And, a positive correlation with emotional exhaustion and cynicism indicates that an intense obsessive passion for work is tied to heightened burnout levels. Additionally, a negative correlation with professional efficacy suggests that obsessive passion for work may undermine one’s professional competence. The research, prompted by the escalating challenge of burnout in the IT industry, addresses the deficiency of understanding on how distinct passions for work contribute to occupational well-being. In conclusion, this research offers actionable recommendations for educational institutions, professionals, and organizational leaders to proactively address and prevent burnout effectively.
