Mental health is a multifaceted concept. This paper aims to describe the meaning of mental health as discussed by young adults. The study was conducted in Delhi-NCR with young people between 18-29 years. The findings indicated that youth conceived of mental health as a complex term, with a broad scope. It was perceived as a variable state, existing on a continuum, inclusive of both pleasant and unpleasant thoughts and feelings. However, many were primarily reminded of difficult situations. Additionally, participants discussed aspects of what it meant to be “mentally healthy.” They emphasised the importance of mental health for overall health as well as the need for a greater focus on this domain. It was noted that stigma and limited information about mental health issues were ubiquitous and problematic.
