Corruption is a global issue that poses a significant threat to democracy and sustainable development goals (SDGs). It involves the exploitation of authority for personal benefits, including bribery, coercion, and favouritism. In South Africa, corruption in public institutions negatively impacts service delivery, such as clean water, sanitation, electricity, and decent employment. The rising democracy is particularly harmed by corruption, as poor people are denied their rights, such as equal distribution of services. Corruption not only jeopardizes democratic goals but also sustainable developmental goals, as resources are diverted for personal gain. This study aimed to question the practice of corruption in South Africa’s attainment of SDGs. Using the Afrocentricity theory, the study adopted a qualitative research method and reviewed secondary data from October 2022 to June 2023. The study found that corruption poses a serious risk to the attainment of SDGs, democracy, the rule of law, and good governance. In conclusion, the study recommends the need for oversight and watchdog mechanisms to tackle corruption in South African municipalities, strengthening independent institutions, establishing internal audit units, enacting whistle-blower protection laws, and empowering civil society organizations and media to combat corruption effectively.
