Mentoring students by experienced mentors, most often by their teachers, provides the right direction to pursue a particular stream of education and vocation according to their aptitude and interest. Mentoring coupled with counselling has been proven to be beneficial for their academic success, professional excellence as well as psychological well-being. Based on the need for mentoring and counselling services, units have been opened in schools and colleges. More so, over the years, lots of refinements have been made in the process of mentoring, for the holistic development of personality of the students. Compassion, empathy, unconditional positive regard and goodwill of the mentors and counsellors have yielded positive results in making students competent and efficacious in dealing effectively with the difficulties faced in day-to-day life and accepting the challenges in the competitive world to prove their worth. Psychological testing, strengthening the strengths of the students, and enhancing emotional intelligence, and self-awareness through techniques based on the Johari window model are recommended.
