Implementation Status Quo of SDG1 in South African Context

Poverty affects everyday lives with deprivation of food, shelter and necessities. To overcome the challenge of poverty, Sustainable Development Goal 1 was established with an aim to achieve zero poverty. The article explores the level of poverty (focus) in South African context (locus). Qualitative research approach was used to gather data. Information is compiled through literature review. Journal articles, books, internet articles, official documents of Statistics South Africa, and Statista are considered in the article. The information was assessed through document analysis. The findings show that there are challenges and implementation gaps that hamper the effective execution of SDG 1 in the country. The challenges are categorised as political, institutional, and economic. A few African case studies are explained as best practices. The African region experiences, to some extent, the same nature of challenges related to economic meltdown, poverty, unemployment, political rifts, and climate changes, to name a few, that cause uncertainties at political, social and economic fronts. South Africa, as part of the region, may learn lessons to eradicate poverty in a country-specific context. Recommendations are offered as a contribution to the fields of public management and development studies.
