The digital era refers to the period characterized by the widespread use of digital technologies in nearly every aspect of daily life. The digital age which began in the late 20th century has immensely impacted people across different generations, influencing their lifestyles, communication, learning habits, and social behaviors. The rise of digital technologies has significantly transformed the nature of interpersonal relationships, particularly among different generations. While technology offers new avenues for communication and bonding through social media, video calls, and messaging apps, it also introduces barriers such as the digital divide, disparities in digital literacy, and differing communication preferences between age groups. This review investigates the transition from physical closeness to virtual proximity, focusing on how digital platforms and technologies have reshaped intergenerational connectivity. It examines both the potential of technology to bridge generational gaps by fostering learning, emotional support, and sustained contact as well as its limitations, including increased social isolation, anxiety due to technological complexities, and the decline of face-to-face interactions. By analyzing current literature and case studies, this review highlights the need for strategies to bridge the technological divide and create meaningful, sustainable connections between generations in the age of virtual proximity.
