Substance use disorder (SUD) is one of the critical problems of the world’s public health scene. The traditional methods of identifying the people at risk are usually dependent on self-reporting and clinical tests which might overlook the early alerts. Due to the explosion of social media, people continue to post their own experiences and behavior online, thus generating an uproar of information to draw analysis. The aim of this paper is to dive further into the investigation of the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in particular, as well as natural language processing and Machine learning (ML) in conducting the analysis of social media data with the end goal of detecting the subjects on the brink of SUD. Based on the latest studies and approaches, this paper discusses what can be done, the limitations of possibilities, and ethical aspects in the use of AI to identify early detection and interventions in SUD cases.
