Corruption is a global issue, and its consequences impede progress and undermine good governance. Even worse, it undermines stability and trust. It undermines the ethos of democratic governance. Corruption remains a global phenomenon, and no one can deny that it is one of the most serious issues in the developing world. This may explain why corruption is such a significant impediment to South Africa’s long-term economic development and good government. Corruption weakens democracy and public trust in government, as well as negatively impacting state services and, by extension, community and social development. Several cases of corruption have shaken the foundation of trust between the South African government and citizens. It is also fueled by the uneven implementation of anti-corruption policies, leading citizens to question the ability of South African institutions to combat corruption effectively. This article argues that there is a need for comprehensive and effective measures to prevent and fight corruption in South Africa.
