This paper reviews the principles of sustainable development to ensure that the principles foster effective community livelihoods in South Africa. Sustainable development has become a catchword in the debate about development mainly because it has been coupled with a widespread limit of categories, analyses, and importance towards community livelihoods. Moreover, sustainable development has been scrutinised from diverse viewpoints, which has produced various meanings to show how its principles impact community livelihoods. This paper is purely theoretical and depends on literature to exhibit its arguments, seeking data from published scholarly journals, reports, and previously published studies. The principles of sustainable development form the basis of establishing long-term all-inclusive and resilient community livelihoods. Furthermore, the principles of sustainable development provide guidelines to policymakers, community projects and the country’s strategies that seek to ensure an equilibrium between fiscal, ecological and societal sustainability. The paper concludes that the principles of sustainable development are only effective in fostering community livelihoods when social equity, economic sustainability, participatory governance and environmental protection are ensured. Sustainable development is a crucial framework for addressing socio-economic issues and ensuring long-term well-being for communities in South Africa. Therefore, the paper recommends the empowerment of communities, investment in sustainable practices and addressing imbalances. A collaboration of all affected stakeholders, such as the government, communities, among others, should be ensured to establish sustainable communities and foster effective community livelihoods.
