This working paper attempts to present the transformative journey of a small landholding farmer in establishing sustainable and profitable farmland, drawing inspiration from the innovative 1.5-acre model farm pioneered by the Deendayal Research Institute. The study documents the farmer’s experiences in adopting sustainable techniques to overcome the challenges faced in traditional farming practices. Central to the farmer’s vision is the creation of a market where vegetable selling prices align with production costs, ensuring not only economic viability but also ecological sustainability. The paper outlines the strategic shifts made in agricultural practices, including organic cultivation methods, efficient water management, and integrated pest management, all of which contribute to higher yields while minimizing environmental impact. Key findings demonstrate that the adoption of sustainable practices not only enhances the farmer’s economic stability but also promotes soil health, biodiversity, and resource conservation. By showcasing the farmer’s journey, this paper contributes valuable insights into establishing self-sustaining agricultural models that prioritize both economic profitability and ecological equilibrium.
