This study investigates the multifaceted barriers hindering sports participation among college students in Coimbatore. The research explores personal, socio-economic, cultural, and institutional challenges using a qualitative, phenomenological approach. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with undergraduate students (aged 18-24) from various higher educational institutions and analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings reveal that time constraints due to academic commitments (40%) are a primary personal barrier, alongside psychological factors like anxiety. Despite institutional support for many (44%), financial constraints significantly impact participation, with disparities in access to resources and opportunities based on socio-economic status persisting. Cultural norms, particularly pressure to prioritize academics (20%) and gender-based expectations (14%), also act as hindrances. Institutional barriers include a lack of diversity in sports offerings (30%), resource limitations, inadequate facilities (10%), and bureaucratic hurdles (30%). The study concludes that while students value sports, a complex interplay of these barriers limits engagement. Addressing these challenges through enhanced support systems, financial aid, culturally sensitive programs, diverse offerings, and flexible scheduling is crucial for promoting holistic student well-being and fostering greater sports participation in the collegiate environment.
