In India, the intersection of mental health and aging has gained increasing attention due to the nations’ evolving demographic landscape and the associated challenges. As the country experiences a gradual shift towards an older population, understanding and addressing mental health concerns among the elderly have become vital. The state of mental health in India’s aging population is marked by a complex interplay of cultural, social, economic and health care factors. Traditional values often shape attitudes towards mental health, contributing to stigma and barriers to seeking help. This is compounded by limited awareness, insufficient mental health infrastructure and inadequate trained professionals. Consequently, many older adults with mental health issues remain undiagnosed and untreated. Loneliness, depression, anxiety and cognitive disorders are prevalent mental health challenges. Social isolation, often exacerbated by changing family structures and migration, compounds these issues. Economic hardships and inadequate pension systems can further strain mental well-being. Despite these challenges, initiatives aimed at improving mental health among the elderly are emerging. Integrating mental health care into primary health care workers to identify and address mental health issues are important steps toward enhancing the well-being of older adults. In conclusion, the state of mental health and aging in India presents a multifaceted challenges shaped by cultural norms, societal changes and health care infrastructure. Addressing this issue requires concerted efforts to de-stigmatize mental health, increase awareness and build a comprehensive support system that ensures the psychological well-being of the elderly population as the nation continues to age.
