The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the shift from traditional classroom-based education to online learning, prompting higher education institutions to adopt e-learning mechanisms swiftly. This study explores the emergence of e-learning in Punjab’s higher education institutions during the pandemic and examines the factors influencing the effectiveness of online teaching. A sample of 240 teachers from selected universities and colleges in Punjab was surveyed, focusing on demographic profiles, experiences with online education, and factors impacting online teaching. Key findings reveal that interpersonal and communication skills, secure internet connections, availability of appropriate course materials, and learners’ adaptability to technology were the most significant factors influencing online teaching effectiveness. The study also highlighted the critical role of reliable infrastructure, institutional support, teacher training, and the use of personal devices in ensuring the success of e-learning. The results suggest that despite challenges, e-learning has created opportunities for more flexible, personalized, and accessible education. The study concludes that the lessons learned during this transition will be vital for shaping resilient, technology-driven educational systems in the future.
