Face recognition and tracking is a fast expanding, and interesting as well as challenging area. In present a face recognition system is the most useable system for identification or verification of any human being automatically either from a still image or from any moving image or from a video. A face recognition and detection system is popularly used for the security purpose and it can be compare with the other biometrics like iris recognition system and fingerprint system that are used mainly in government organizations. The main benefit of a face recognition system is that it do not mandatory demand to ask the human to come in front of cctv or in any sensor like in other biometric systems it is required the human should take his eyes (in the case of iris scanner) and fingers (in the case of finger scanner) in front of the sensor and wait there for some time to scan the body parts. In the face recognition and detection system if a human being is walking under CCTV then this system can capture the data of the human and can identify or verify the person. In this paper, we have given overview of various face recognition and tracking methods studied and researched since last few years. This paper also highlighted the major challenges being faced during face detection and tracking in practical situations.
