This research aimed at studying the students’ perception of student-teacher relationship and understanding teachers’ important characteristics to build sound relationships with students. The student teacher relationship is studied under four dimensions such as affective, support, and interpersonal and methodological competence. A mixed method research design was adopted for a deeper understanding of the variables. Quantitative data was collected with the help of a questionnaire from 254 students and four focus group interviews were conducted to collect qualitative data. The research is conducted on higher education students and the results reflected that the perceptions about student-teacher relationships differs between male and female students. The attributes of teachers considered positive in building good relationships are accessibility, friendly behaviour, problem-solving approach, punctuality and appreciation of students.
