India is a multi-religious country and its composite population consists of people belonging to all major religious faiths in the world. Originally the word ‘secular’ was no where mentioned in the constitution, although the framers of our constitution were committed to the values of secularism and enshrined these principles in secular articles of the constitution in unmistakable terms. To reinforce the principles of secularism, recently, the constitution has been amended and specific mention has been made to secularism in order to confirm the basic nature of our body politic. A theoretical definition of ‘secularism’ in a political context is given here by ‘Donald E.Smith’.
