Parental encouragement and emotional intelligence

The present study was undertaken to know the impact of parental encouragement on emotional intelligence among adolescents. The total sample consisted of 300 subjects equally divided into boys and girls and on the two levels of parental encouragement (High & Low). Factorial design (2×2) was used where two levels of parental encouragement (High & Low) were matched with two levels of sex (Boys & Girls) to yield four conditions. The subjects were selected using stratified random sampling technique from the schools of Dehradun, Uttarakhand. Parental Encouragement Scale developed by Sharma (2010) was used to assess the degree of Parental Encouragement and Emotional Intelligence Scale developed by Hyde, Pethe, and Dhar (2002) was used to measure Emotional Intelligence of the subjects. The data was analysed using standard statistical packages. Findings revealed that higher level of parental encouragement promotes emotional intelligence. Gender difference was also found on the level of emotional intelligence and its dimensions namely Self Awareness, Managing Relations and Value Orientations.
