Local Economic Development and Township Enterprises: An Overview of Challenges and Opportunities

The challenge of converting townships into sustainable areas exists because of the past socio-spatial and economic planning. With the present emphasis on inclusive development and change, governance and execution policies should be parallel and aligned. This paper explores the contribution of local economic development (LED) to township enterprises. It aims to identify critical barriers and opportunities to sustainable township enterprises. The analysis draws on relevant scholarly and policy literature to map out emerging trends, structural challenges, and institutional responses related to township enterprises development. The analysis reveals limited income, lack of employment prospects, and inadequate manufacturing activities as some of the hindering township enterprises development. To mitigate these disparities, it is crucial to explore opportunities in the digital economy, renovate townships into areas for production activities and implement comprehensive participatory citizenship. By highlighting successful case studies and innovative practices, this study provides actionable recommendations for policymakers.
