The study focused on leveraging research for sustainable development in tertiary education institutions in Africa. The problem of the study is failure by the tertiary institutions of education in Africa to harness research work for sustainable development. Research work is important in contributing to innovation and industrialization of the industries in Africa. The study was guided by Responsible Research and Innovation theory by Rene Von Schomberg. The main assumption of the theory was to align research work with contemporary societal needs and ethical considerations. The literature of the research study was focusing on factors promoting the development of research in tertiary institutions of education, effects of research work on sustainability development in tertiary institutions, challenges encountered in developing research work for sustainability in tertiary education, and strategies for successful research work for sustainable development in tertiary institutions of education. The study adopted a retrospective bibliometric design. The research analysis was conducted in posit cloud using bibliometric package, and the reporting followed the PRISMA 2020 framework. Many journal articles relating to the research study were published by the South African institutions of education. The result of the research study shows that, research work is important for sustainable development also hep to generate evidence that informs national strategies, community adaptation practices, and cross-sectoral governance.
