Motivation is a critical psychological determinant of athletic engagement, persistence, and performance. However, athletes across various levels often experience periods of low motivation, which can lead to reduced training intensity, emotional withdrawal, and even dropout. This review aims to critically examine the underlying causes of poor motivation in sports and to evaluate a comprehensive range of intervention strategies designed to enhance and sustain athletes’ motivation. It explores psychological, environmental, and behavioral contributors to motivational decline and draws on established theoretical frameworks such as Self-Determination Theory, Achievement Goal Theory, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing. The paper provides an in-depth analysis of evidence-based strategies including goal setting, mindfulness, imagery, and the use of technological tools. Case studies and applied examples are presented to demonstrate real-world applications of these interventions. Finally, the review highlights future research directions and emphasizes the need for individualized, context-sensitive approaches to foster long-term motivation and psychological well-being in athletes.
