The aim of this paper is to analyses gender-based violence as a threat to peaceful living in the society in South Africa. It gives an overview of the problem of gender-based violence in South Africa. Gender-based violence is one of the most common forms of atrocities against any individual in the state. The paper deals with the abuse that people of different genders suffer at the hands of their partners, colleagues, friends, relatives, and other people in different relationships or outside the relationships. Gender-based violence is a multifaceted phenomenon which should be studied within the broader ideological and socio-political context in which it occurs. This paper will start by discussing the historical background of gender-based violence. It will come to the myth of gender-based violence, types of gender-based violence, the extent of gender-based violence, the effects of gender-based violence, and prevention and remedies of this problem. Towards the end of this paper, the researcher will come up with recommendations and a conclusion. The paper will employ a qualitative method of research to investigate the challenge, and it will be critical in design. It will use the thematic and inductive methods of data analysis and interpretation.
