During the period when Gandhi’s freedom movement acquired its mass base, he again and again defined and explained the concept of Swaraj as the goal of freedom struggle, in terms of political, economic, social and moral rights of the downtrodden and exploited Indian masses. While still in South Africa, in 1909 itself he had expressed his basic idea of Swaraj in his very first Book, ‘Hind Swaraj’ or Indian Home Rule.
