Marriage rituals in Haryana are deeply rooted in tradition, reflecting the community’s social structure, religious beliefs, and historical legacy. Over the past century, these customs have undergone significant transformations due to modernization, urbanization, and globalization. While some traditional elements remain intact, others have been adapted or replaced to align with contemporary societal norms. This paper explores the evolution of Jat marriage rituals, examining both the forces that have led to change and the efforts made to preserve cultural authenticity. It analyses the socio-religious significance of pre-wedding, wedding, and post-wedding customs, highlighting how factors such as economic shifts, legal reforms, and media influence have impacted marriage traditions. Additionally, it discusses how rural Haryana has retained many of these rituals, ensuring their continuity despite external pressures. By employing a qualitative research approach, including historical analysis, ethnographic observations, and interviews, this study provides an in-depth understanding of the intersection between tradition and modernity in Jat matrimonial customs.
