The occupation of medical doctors requires emotional intelligence and they have to deal with a variety of emotions of patients. On the contrary, IT engineers spend more time on computers and they deal with human emotions in fewer amounts. Though both professionals work in different surroundings, they themselves are not without emotions. As emotions play an important role in handling relationships as well as professional surroundings, studying emotional intelligence in both professional backgrounds is essential. Studies revealed that high emotional intelligence is useful in the progress of professional as well as personal life. The chief objective of the present study was to compare the emotional intelligence of medical doctors and IT engineers. To evaluate emotional intelligence (Schutte Self-report Emotional Intelligence Test, 1998) was used. In the present study total N=120 professionals were included, among them n=60 were medical doctors and n=60 were IT engineers. Data analysis was carried out by performing an independent ‘t’ test. The result indicates that there is no statistically significant difference between the means of both groups t (118) = 1.654, p = .101 >.05. The detailed discussion has been done by focusing on the type of background in both the professions.
