The present study extends the findings of the previous studies on pride and its correlates by examining the relation between hubristic and authentic pride, the Big Five trait of agreeableness and helping attitude among the elderly. Examining the relationship between agreeableness and the two types of pride, it also assesses the mediating role of helping attitude. 102 participants (62 males) above 60 years (Mean age=65.53) completed the Authentic and Hubristic Pride Scale, agreeableness dimension of NEO-FFI and the Helping Attitude Scale. Findings showed that authentic pride had positive associations with agreeableness and helping attitude whereas hubristic pride showed negative associations with agreeableness and helping attitude. Hierarchical regression analysis showed agreeableness and helping attitude as significant predictors of both hubristic and authentic pride and this association between the facets of pride and agreeableness was completely mediated by helping attitude. The study highlights the importance of the facets of pride and its correlates which may be critical for improving the overall quality of life for older adults.
