This study examines the impact of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) on the employment and empowerment of rural women in Patiala district, Punjab. Based on primary data collected from 100 women workers across selected worksites in Bhunerheri and Sanour blocks, the study analyzes their socio-economic background and the outcomes of their participation in the scheme. The findings reveal that most respondents belonged to economically disadvantaged and landless households with low literacy levels. MGNREGA has significantly enhanced wage employment opportunities, particularly during agricultural off-seasons. The scheme has improved women’s financial autonomy by facilitating direct wage payments into their bank accounts, increasing their control over income. Participation in MGNREGA has also led to greater confidence, awareness, social interaction, and involvement in household decision-making. Overall, the study concludes that MGNREGA serves as an effective instrument for promoting economic and social empowerment among rural women.
