Domestic Violence is one of the most unreported but frequently occurring crimes in India. The purpose of the present study was to understand various perspectives and experiences of victims of domestic violence and barriers in its disclosure. A qualitative research design was used to collect data through a semi-structured interview, from a sample of 15 female participants who were referred for counselling at the crime against women cell in Delhi. The obtained data was then subjected to thematic analysis. The themes centered around domestic violence revealed that domestic violence can take the form of psychological, physical, financial, and sexual violence. A history of neglect by the abuser was reported in some cases. The triggers of violence by the perpetrator were identified as substance abuse, consumption of pornography and infidelity. Additionally, the patriarchal culture was identified as a perpetrating and maintaining factor of domestic violence. Domestic violence had Consequences on the mental and physical health of the victims. The barriers to disclosure of domestic violence and the solutions to overcome them are discussed.
