Social media makes a noteworthy contribution to people’s lives that facilitate different groups of communities and people to connect, interact, and exchange knowledge. Some broadly used platforms are Facebook, Wikipedia, Twitter, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Instagram and X. Social media is not only a means of social networking but also has multifaceted uses in various social situations. Nowadays, companies use social media platforms to carry out financial benefits and make smart choices. Social also helps to manipulate the behaviour dynamics of youth for utilization of a particular goal. Thus, social media is being made use of for the construction and as well degradation of people from all backgrounds of life. Social media’s role in a user’s life has increased dramatically over the past decade. It has been used increasingly as a leisure activity amongst young adults. The types of social media have also diversified with time and the ease of access is worrying. Several studies have demonstrated that social media use can lead to the development of several psychiatric disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Users of social media may experience bullying, shaming, and negative responses to their posts. These users may also experience discomfort due to comparison of their self-image and life satisfaction to other users. Additionally, negative social media behaviours can cause isolation, depression, and mood changes based on negative content users see while scrolling. The present review paper will try to explore the impact of social media on mental health of people. Literature has acknowledged the limited knowledge regarding the preparedness of mental health clinicians to address the impact of heavy social media use on clients’ mental health.
