Drivers bad health affects their performance on the wheel. The present study aimed to estimate the prevalence of cardiovascular disorders and to identify their risk factors among taxi drivers of Punjab state, North India. Information about Gastrointestinal Disorders, demographic features, eating habits, smoking habits, self-perceived job stress, psychological support, and fatigue was obtained from 300 professional taxi drivers using a self-structured, validated research schedule. The significant determinants are divided into five major categories, namely, socio-demographic and life style factors, work-related factors, ergonomics factors and psychological factors. On the basis of the results of Multiple Logistic Regression, a model has been developed which is consistent with hypothesized model and proves that various risk factors taken in the study has significant impact on the Gastrointestinal Disorders. The prevalence of hypertension was high among bus drivers. Age, BMI, supporting a large family, and dietary habits associated with the job showed a significant association with gastrointestinal disorders. It can be said that healthy and hygienic eating practices, physical and psychological well-being influences the health of taxi drivers. Among the investigated variables and parameters in the present study, perceived risk factors revealed the best association with gastrointestinal disorders, and are good predictors of gastrointestinal disorders. Prevention strategies need to be focused on this occupational group. Application of corrective and suitable remedies in the field of professional ergonomics and health examination programs for professional taxi drivers can be helpful for reducing gastrointestinal disorders.
