Climate change presents an unprecedented challenge that transcends national borders, impacting communities worldwide. Amidst this global crisis, local governments emerge as important actors in climate change mitigation and adaptation. This study explores the multifaceted role of local governments in managing climate change, highlighting their unique capacity to enact impactful policies, foster community resilience, and drive sustainable development at the grassroots level. Local governments serve as frontline responders to climate-related risks and vulnerabilities, possessing intimate knowledge of their communities’ specific needs and challenges. Through proactive planning and policy implementation, local governments can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance energy efficiency, and promote renewable energy adoption within their jurisdictions. Local governments can catalyse the transition towards low-carbon economies by leveraging regulatory tools, incentives, and partnerships, fostering innovation and green growth. A desktop research method was followed to solicit information from relevant literature. Local governments are crucial in building their communities’ climate change resilience and adaptive capacity. Moreover, through public outreach, education, and stakeholder engagement, local governments can empower citizens to take proactive measures to mitigate climate risks and build community resilience. Collaboration and cooperation among local governments are essential for scaling up climate action and achieving meaningful impact. By fostering a culture of innovation, inclusivity, and accountability, local governments can lead by example, inspiring action at all levels of society and driving transformative change towards a sustainable and resilient future. Findings revealed that local governments occupy a central position in the global response to climate change, wielding significant influence over mitigation, adaptation, and resilience-building efforts. By harnessing their unique strengths, capacities, and resources, local authorities can serve as catalysts for change, driving sustainable development and safeguarding the well-being of present and future generations.
