This study was conducted to determine the psychometric characteristics and validity of the Hindi version of the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) in Hindi-speaking Indian cultural milieu. This study involved 900 men and women aged 17 to 87 years, all possessing at least a High School education, from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. Participants completed the Hindi translation of the Beck Depression Inventory-II, while a sub-group of 500 participants also completed the Perceived Stress Scale-10 and the Satisfaction with Life Scale. Factor analysis (principal components) of BDI-II revealed a single factor with all 21 items, and CFA by AMOS revealed a single factor solution with adequate goodness of fit. The Hindi translation of BDI-II revealed high reliability, construct, and convergent validity. BDI-II positively correlated with uncontrollable perceived stress and negatively with controllable perceived stress and life satisfaction. The significant gender effect showed more depressive symptoms in women than men, however, no age differences appeared on BDI-II. The results showed that the Hindi translation of BDI-II is a reliable and valid measure of depression in the Hindi-speaking Indian population.
