As South Africa marks three decades of democracy, the rise of coalition politics marks a significant shift in the country’s political landscape. This novel phenomenon presents substantial implications for governance, especially at the municipal level. This study investigates the impact of coalition politics on South African municipalities, which play a critical role in delivering essential services to citizens. Utilizing a qualitative desktop research approach, the study explores the evolving political dynamics influenced by coalition governance structures and their effects on service delivery and operational efficiency. The findings reveal that coalitions may adversely affect operational mechanisms and service provision in metropolitan municipalities. Emphasizing the necessity of professional bureaucracies, the research highlights their role in capacity building and strengthening institutions within these municipalities. Additionally, by drawing lessons from international experiences in Lesotho, Finland, and Germany, the study offers insights for South African municipalities to effectively navigate coalition politics while enhancing governance, transparency, accountability, and citizen participation.
