Mental health forms a vital component of our overall health and is a multifaceted concept with a polysemic nature. The terminologies in the mental health domain are confusing as different terms can be used synonymously. Over the years the association of mental health with mental health disorders has shifted to a more holistic understanding of the term including states of well-being. This paper aims to present an overview of the commonly mentioned concepts in the mental health literature including theoretical underpinnings in this field. The paper attempts to give readers a comprehensive picture of the multiple layers of meanings associated with mental health and how they can support or even contradict each other.
